Simone Biles and the Comeback Built on Honesty

Simone Biles is the most decorated gymnast in history. That's not the reason she belongs in this space.

In 2021, at the peak of her career, Biles withdrew from several Tokyo Olympic finals to protect her mental health after losing her sense of air position mid-air — a rare and genuinely dangerous condition gymnasts call “the twisties.” She was criticized publicly by people who'd never attempted what she does for a living. She stood by the decision anyway.

Three years later, she came back. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Biles won gold again, on the same sport's biggest stage, after doing the hardest thing an elite competitor can do: stepping away in public, then returning without hiding from what happened.

That sequence — protect yourself first, come back stronger, don't pretend the hard chapter didn't happen — is a better definition of toughness than “push through no matter what.” Real resilience includes knowing when to stop, get support, and reset. Biles proved a comeback built on honesty hits harder than one built on denial.

That's the standard we're chasing at DOBETTER: not perfection, not invincibility. Just the discipline to protect what matters, and the faith to come back and finish what you started.
